Located at the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street, just a block from Pennsylvania Station, the New Yorker Hotel is among the largest Art Deco buildings in New York City. In fact, it was built just before the Empire State Building as well as many of the taller skyscrapers in Manhattan. At the time of its erection, the New Yorker Hotel was the tallest building in New York.
Amenities of the New Yorker include 912 guest rooms; 25,000 square feet of meeting space; two ballrooms, 14 meeting and conference rooms; and the the Sky Lounge on the 39th floor of the hotel. Additionally there is an award-winning catering department, the 24-hour Tick Tock Diner and Cooper's Tavern, a complimentary Fitness Center, and a fully-equipped Business Center. The New Yorker is a member of the Ramada Worldwide chain.
The New Yorker Hotel is a Midtown Manhattan hotel is within walking distance of Broadway theaters, Madison Square Garden, Macy's department store, and the Jacob Javits Convention Center. For the first time in 75 years, this prestigious and historic New York City hotel is undergoing a full renovation including all rooms and suites and a beautiful redesign for the public space 1
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s the hotel hosted a number of popular Big Bands while notable figures such as Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford and even Fidel Castro stayed there. The inventor Nikola Tesla spent the last ten years of his life in near-seclusion in Suite 3327 (where he also died), largely devoting his time to feeding pigeons while occasionally meeting dignitaries. 2
The 43-storey New Yorker Hotel was built in 1929 and opened its doors on January 2, 1930. Much like its contemporaries, the Empire State Building (opened in 1931) and the Chrysler Building (opened in 1930), the New Yorker Hotel is designed in the Art Deco style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. The building's pyramidal, set-back tower structure largely resembles that of the Empire State Building, which lies just a couple blocks due east on 34th Street. For many years, the New Yorker Hotel was New York's largest hotel. 3
New York-based Stonehill & Taylor was contracted by hotel management for the architectural and interior design of the $65 million renovation. Stonehill & Taylor’s design replaced floral carpets and quilted bedspreads with art-deco-inspired contemporary interiors featuring geometric patterns, skyscraper-style case goods (such as bookcases and desks), customized lighting, and high-contrast gold and silver against dark zebra wood and chocolate upholsteries. Though still in the midst o major refurbishing, the hotel now has interior design novelties such as pillow-top mattresses, satin-covered wall-mounted headboards, custom-designed lighting and original artwork . 7
The hotel has a rich history and nostalgia. The property’s chief engineer is the unofficial archivist, and his collection of old brochures and photos dating back to 1929 tells a story of a major piece of New York City history. 8
Some regular customers and longtime NY residents have nicknamed the New Yorker "Times Square Hotel." This is because the hotel is just a few yards from Sixth Avenue’s business and media corridor, in the heart of New York's Broadway theatre district. 10
